Control rise in prices
I HAVE noticed a sudden rise in the prices of goods in
almost all major supermarkets in Port Moresby in the past three months. The
obvious items included Zenag eggs (one dozen) jumping from K6.50 to K10 and
Trukai rice (10kg) from K19 to K27, and many more. On the average, the price
of goods had risen by K5 within a three-month period. This may be caused by
the increase in fuel price, which is setting a chain reaction in the cost of
living across the board. Why the sudden rise in prices of goods by a big
margin in such a short span of time? I urge the relevant authorities
responsible for controlling the prices of goods and services not only to
maintain a smooth transition but a controlled increase in the cost of goods.

Three cheers to Sr Jane
I COMMEND the Government for recognising the efforts of Sr Jane Frances
Millane in the 2008 New Year’s Logohu awards. Through her tireless years of
teaching and the administration of education, she has groomed and shaped so
many of her pupils to be successful in their lives today. In her, we saw the
qualities of an educator, disciplinarian, mentor, role model and chiefly, a
mother, intertwined together into one unit. Sr Jane, I salute you and share
the joy of your achievement. – Ex-Malala 2003, Lae
K2,000 donation misused
THE K2,000 donated was for the Kia people and not for the greedy individuals
to share among yourselves. It is embarrassing to find that the money given
to the aid post is being shared among those who killed pigs following the
presentation. Remember, very little things leads on to bigger things and if
you cannot use the donation properly, don’t bother talking about Government
development and other forms of progress because we are wasting our time. –

8.5% increase too much
THE 8.5% increase in UPNG accommodation fees for this year is just too much
for our poor parents and guardians back at home. Most of our parents’ annual
income is around K1,500. So how do you expect these people to meet the high
cost of fees? I appeal to the University Council to review your proposed
fees. Please be considerate. – JKhan, via email
