MP plans to address global warming
THE Department of Environment and Conservation will review
key development sectors to implement various strategies to help in the fight
against global warming this year.
Minister for Environment and Conservation Benny Allan made this known in
Goroka early this week that his department would embark on a
whole-Government approach to deal with reducing emissions from deforestation
in developing (REDD) countries and the global climatic changes.
Mr Allan, who recently returned from the 13th United Nations Framework
Convention on Climatic Change (UNCCC) conference in Bali, said the
strategies would be no different to some of those that were adopted by both
developed and developing nations around the world.
He told The National in Goroka that getting prepared for REDD would involve
various reviews and assessments of development sectors as multiple drivers
of deforestations would have to be assessed and determined.
Mr Allan said coordinating mechanisms had been established in 2006 and
immediate reviews would commence immediately early this year.
He said he had discussed uniform strategies to apply in the fight against
global warming with different countries and international donor agencies at
the Bali conference.
