A man died on Monday after falling off a vehicle, which police said was overloaded.
The incident happened at Muli village in Ialibu district, Southern Highlands province.
Provincial police commander Chief Supt Samson Mapi said yesterday the PMV truck was overloaded with passengers and was travelling towards Ialibu when the man, who was standing at the back of the truck fell off and died.
Supt Mapi said the driver of the vehicle was arrested by police and was now behind bars awaiting charges to be laid against him.
Meanwhile, he said that the New Year celebrations in the province was very peaceful unlike in the past.
He said that some people living along the road celebrated the New Year by throwing mud at other people and the passing public but his policemen patrolling along the road stopped them.
Supt Mapi said the eastern end of the province was very quite during the Christmas and New Year period except for this fatal accident.
