Granny allegedly shot by police

By NOEL BERRY
A 64-year-old grandmother was wounded from shots allegedly fired by police in Mt Hagen on New Year’s eve.
The woman was shot in her buttocks, and has been admitted at the Mt Hagen General Hospital.
It is alleged that the grandmother received the bullet wounds after police fired warning shots to disperse drunkards on the road near her house late on New Year’s eve.
According to her son Benjamin Iki, two policemen wearing masks fired warning shots to disperse drunkards on the road.
He said when he came out to find out what was going on, the two policemen held him up at gun point outside his house at Warakum and ordered him to go back inside quickly.
Western Highlands acting provincial police commander chief Insp Ambane Kaiglo confirmed reports of trouble in the area, which required police intervention, but denied that police shot the woman.
Insp Kaiglo said he would look at the medical report before deciding on an investigation.
Staff at the Mt Hagen General Hospital were reluctant to release any information relating to the condition of the woman, but it is understood she is to undergo surgery.
