Teachers’ claims to be settled soon: Dr Topa

By ALISON ANIS
TEACHERS frustrated over the failure to release their leave fares and entitlements in time will soon receive their claims.

First Assistant Secretary for Teaching and Learning Dr Michael Topa said there would be no more frustrations as Education officials were now working around the clock to process leave fares and entitlements for teachers who were eligible for it.
Dr Topa told The National yesterday the entitlements were not released in time because they had to go through a long screening process to make sure there were no duplicates in payments.
He said screening would have been conducted earlier if teachers had submitted personal profiles along with leave applications in time.
He, however, added there were other major setbacks to the timely release of funds.
Dr Topa said entitlements for teachers in other provinces would be through the provincial education office while those for teachers in NCD would be available through the NCD education office.
A total of K1.8 million in leave fares and entitlements for teachers in NCD has been made available by the Education Department after the Department of Treasury and Finance approved and released it.
It was determined through the screening that more fund was needed to cater for the 500 plus teachers including immediate family members.
“Seeing that, the department then settled for a total of K2.8 million to cover for those teachers who missed out,” Dr Topa said.
