Western Highlands Province flood leaves 200 homeless

More than 200 people are left homeless after a devastating flood washed away their homes and food gardens in the Lower Kagul in Western Highlands province.
The Kepeka Kole and the Tokopumb tribes are looking for new homes and land to make gardens after continuous rain flooded the Kagul River destroying more than 20 homes and gardens last weekend.
John Waima, a local in the area, said yesterday that no lives were lost but domestic animals like pigs and dogs were washed away.
He said that continuous rain last Friday and Saturday caused the Kagul River to flood.
Mr Waima added that the people had made temporary homes in the Pupua area and were now waiting for the flood water to subside.
He said the provincial disaster committee was yet to assess the damage and inform the provincial government of their needs.
Mr Waima said that the biggest problem was not food but land for resettlement.
He said the place they were living now was an open field and it was overcrowded.
He said they had reported the damages to their local LLG council to take up with the provincial government and the provincial disaster office.
