Pylon set on fire

By LUTHER SCAT LAMANG
An old World War II bomb was attached to a power pylon and set alight in the Toma-Vunadidir area of East New Britain last Thursday with the intention to blow up the pylon to cause disruptions to power in the area.

PNG Power acting regional manager John Pou said someone attached a war-time bomb to the power pylon and set fire to the pole, hoping the bomb would detonate.
He said when PNG Power workmen turned up to put out the fire and replace the burning pole, they discovered the bomb and quickly evacuated the area.
The bomb, however, did not explode.
It was later removed by officials from the provincial disaster office.
Mr Pou said the burnt pole would be replaced shortly after rain in the province ceased.
He said he did not know why someone would want to blow up the pylon using a World War II bomb.
