Increase seismic activity in Mt Tavurvur

Mt Tavurvur in East New Britain province continues to be restless, with seismic activity expected to continue.
However, the Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO) said there was little indication of any build up that might lead to significant eruptive activity like in October 2006.
RVO’s Steve Saunders said seismic activity was slightly increasing, but was still at low levels with some low frequency events.
A bright orange glow was noticeable at night and loud roaring was often heard after the rain.
Residents, especially in Kokopo town, have been raising concerns of the strong smell of sulphur.
RVO officials said since the wind patterns were blowing south-east and east towards Kokopo town, sulphur dioxide was present in the vapour plume.
The public have been advised not to venture close to the volcano due to the possibility of unpredictable explosions.
