Gazelle thrash Gans

By EKONIA PENI
GAZELLE started their round two campaign with a bang when they thrashed Malangan by 13 unanswered runs in Port Moresby men’s softball last Sunday.
Although a win was on the card for Gazelle, the margin was not expected.
But credit to Nelson Kiap, whose lethal pitching was the telling factor in the win. Only three hits were made against him by the 18 Malangan batters he faced.
The win was also a welcome treat for their newly elected club president and former Aussie rules administrator Camillus Kona.
“We will be back and mark my word,” Kona said.
After a pointless first inning, Gazelle opened their account in the second inning with four runs through Demas Totil Jr from a safe hit by Daniel Kinakava, followed by Kinakava and Pius Martin, who were scored on a homer by Peter Kaminiel over midfield.
Gazelle added another nine runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings through David Mickie (three runs including a home run), Gabriel Pamel (two runs), and single points scored by Tony Daple, Bernard Pamel, Kinakava and Martin.
Lack of batting form was the main cause of Malangan’s downfall and the team will need to regroup quickly before the weekend’s clash with Dolphins.
Malangan’s loss has been a gain for the premiers Airways Bears, who unseated the Gans to sixth placing with the Bears moving into the top five after thrashing Kopex 10-3.
Unknown quantity Gabriel Kawai stood out for the Bears scoring two runs including a home run while catcher Lindsay Pulu scored three runs, Blaise Tatai and Brian Lesley contributed two runs each, and Martin Changau (a run) in the Bears win.
The absence of pitcher Apisai Guguna was welcome news for Joe Avuchulas Jr and Dick Bart Jr, who alternated in pitching that created havoc for Kopex batters.
Kopex scored their consolation points through Andrew Livuana, John Bualten and James Akroy.
In the other matches, Bullets thrashed Dolphins 17-4, Elcom nailed Samurai 20-0 and top teams Brown Eagles and Manolos drew 1-1.
Brown Eagles lead the competition on 16 points followed by Manolos 14, Elcom 13, Gazelle 11, Bears 10 Malangan and Bullets on eight each, Dolphins seven, Samurai four and Kopex one.
In B Grade, Brown Eagles lead on 16 points followed by Gazelle 14, Manolos 13, Kopex 10, Bullets and Samurai on nine each, Elcom 6, Bears and Dolphins on three apiece and Malangan one.
