COLUMN I

MID-WEEK, and already some of the New Year’s resolutions are fast fading. So to perk you up, we thought we’d pass on this gem from one of Spy’s ecclesiastical contacts over there in Madang. Enjoy!

AN elderly gentleman of the cloth is addressing a younger priest. “My son. It was indeed a good idea to replace the first four rows of pews with plush bucket theatre seats. It worked like a charm; the front of the church always fills first now.” The young priest smiled and nodded, warmed by the glow of such approval.
***
THE elderly priest continued: “And I must admit that it was you who told me that updated rhythms and a stronger beat to the music would bring young people back to the church, so I supported you when you brought in that rap gospel choir. Now we’re packed to the balcony!!” “Thank you, Father,” beamed the young priest. “I’m pleased that you are open to the new ideas of our youth.”
***
“HOWEVER,” boomed the elderly priest, “I’m afraid you’ve gone too far with the drive-thru confessional.” “But, Father,” protested the young priest, “my confessions and the donations have nearly doubled since I came up with that idea!” The elderly priest’s brow knotted. Then he said: “I know, my son, but that flashing neon sign, ‘Toot ‘n Tell or Go to Hell’, just can’t stay on the church roof!”

SPY’S ultimate destination in the light of the above and previous offerings remains uncertain.

THE British High Commission has an enviable record of support for women victims of domestic violence. Now the high commission will be sponsoring a room for a year at Haus Ruth, the capital’s safe haven for women and children victims of domestic violence; our congratulations to His Excellency David Dunn.

BUT that’s just the thin edge of the wedge. Come on, business houses and corporations throughout PNG – we want to see refuge houses established in each province to go some way towards meeting the terrible backlog of damaged women and children. Sponsor a room – or better still organise sponsorship of a whole house. The need is very real. Cheers!
