COLUMN I

AND so week two of the New Year bites the dust. How are the resolutions going? We have more than a little sympathy for those who made it clear before New Year’s Eve that their resolution for the coming year was to make no more resolutions.

LATE last year, Mike Manning of Transparency International PNG was critical of certain ministers and suggested that there was corruption in their ranks. The PM was not impressed and demanded that Mr Manning should name the guilty parties. The matter has at least for the moment lapsed into limbo.

BUT one of our correspondents has proffered an excellent solution. Why not draw the PM’s attention to the 150 recommendations for prosecution during the last term of Parliament as listed by the Parliamentary Accounts Committee? Nothing appears to have been done about these referrals for investigation and prosecution. Perhaps the lack of action is in itself a glaring example of corruption?

NOT every university is suffering major disruptions in the lead-up to the new academic year. We have the greatest sympathy for Unitech and for the staff and students and hope that matters at the troubled Lae campus will soon be resolved. In the meantime, we’ve received reports that preparations for the new student influx at Pacific Adventist and Divine Word Universities are on target.

SPY in Madang has equipped himself with a mobile, much to the horror of The National’s long-suffering Editor. In his first mobile communication peppered with “hello?” “hello?” the ancient scribbler mentioned that the DWU campus was about to boast a fully-fledged supermarket complete with bakery, fast food outlet and ATMs.

SENIOR police were reported to have stormed into Nonga Base Hospital on Jan 3, kicked ward doors, threatened to shoot patients and destroyed hospital property. They were allegedly drunk at the time. The local police hierarchy has said an internal investigation will be launched into the accusations. Not good enough – arrest them and take them before the courts like anybody else.

HAVE a top weekend!
