Teacher accused of selling classroom
materials
By JUNITA SOL GOMA
A primary school teacher has been accused of selling parts of a
classroom building.
The teacher, from the Gulf province and teaching at the Kilakila Primary
School in NCD, was accused by staff members for selling parts of a
condemned classroom to the public for money.
The classroom was built by Wari Vele Contractors some six years ago and
its cost at that time was K50,000.
But it was condemned and deemed “unsafe to use” after it was built.
The suspect was known by both the staff members and community for
selling building materials to the public such as roofing iron and walls
etc.
It was brought to police attention last month and the school awaits
classes to resume so that a new board of management can be elected to
solve the matter.
When asked if the accusations were true, the teacher claimed that he had
only arranged with a contractor to tear down the building so that the
school could sell the materials and make some extra money.
“The agreement was to demolish the building, sell the materials and
divide the money between the school and the contractor, which is what I
did,” he said.
He claimed that the materials removed were sold for K500, which had gone
back to the school.
When The National asked for him to supply the name of the contractor,
who removed the materials, his response was: “I forgot his name.”
But a senior teacher, who refused to be named, said that they would do
their best to settle this matter as soon as classes resumed.
“This school had so many problems and would collapse very soon because
people are not doing the right thing to help its existence.
“It’s only a handful of us here, who really want to put this school back
on its feet. And we are in dire need of public support,” the teacher
said.
