Oro police chief appears in court
SUSPENDED Oro police chief last Friday appeared before the
Popondetta committal court on charges of causing grievous bodily harm.
Chief Insp Buafe Hugo appeared in person after he was charged last Jan 9 for
allegedly causing bodily harm to a woman (named) under the PNG Criminal Code
Act.
The alleged attack on the woman reportedly drew outbursts from police
commissioner Gari Baki last October.
Senior provincial magistrate Lesley Asimba scheduled another mention
appearance for
Hugo on Jan 28.
It was alleged that last Oct 27, the woman did not returned to Hugo’s
official house where police say the two had lived in a defector
relationship.
It was reported that the next day Hugo found her at her brother’s home where
he allegedly assaulted her by kicking her on the chest and other parts of
the body as she slept in the house.
It was further alleged that Hugo had grabbed her on one of her thighs and a
shoulder and lifted her to the air before swinging her head first against a
concrete slap, from a culvert which was being used as a step.
The woman was then airlifted to Port Moresby for medical treatment.
She is believed to be permanently paralysed from her neck down.
Hugo is out on K100 police bail and will appear before the same court at the
end of this month.
