Women basketball programme

WOMEN In Sports in conjuction with the Basketball Federation of PNG are running a four day training programme at the Sir John Guise indoor stadium in Port Moresby.
The programme sponsored by the Australian Sports Outreach Programme starts today and will end on Thursday. The programme is aimed at getting more women to organize and play basketball.
Every female who is interested in the sport is invited to come and participate.
The programme has four sessions which will involve skills practice, knowledge and games. With sessions held in the respective days, today will be focused on beginners on the first day, and current female players on the second day.
The third day is for older players who have retired from playing the game and the last day is a training session for all females who would like to be involved as coaches, technical people and administrators.
The sessions start at 8:30am and finishes at 1pm daily and a registration fee of K2 per person will be charged.
The chairlady of Women In Sports Veitu Diro has called on every woman and young girls to participate in this programme regardless of whether they know how to play basketball or not.
The programme was prompted by the PNG women basketball team’s success at the Pacific games last year where they won bronze medal.
Mrs Diro, who is also the national coach, said that the women’s team had the potential to do better but their setbacks could be blamed on lack of training and also lack of development of the sport at a very young age.
She is, therefore making this as a start in the development of the sport, and hopes many women will start playing basketball.
