Serious crime cases drop throughout PNG
By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
THE drop in serious crime cases throughout the country since 2003 shows
that the National Government’s five-year economical reform policy is
working, Internal Security Minister John Hickey said last Friday.
Mr Hickey said the drop in crime cases indicated that the Medium Term
Development Strategy that promoted the informal sector was working.
Mr Hickey also said this Government had promoted transparency in the
function of public office holders by not interfering with the work of
the Public Accounts Committee.
Mr Hickey said opposing politicians should consider statistics in crime
cases and not to mislead the nation.
According to statistics released by the Deputy Police Commissioner’s
(Operation) office last month, murder and rape cases reported throughout
PNG was the lowest since 2003.
Statistics showed that there were 540 murder cases reported last year,
580 murder cases reported in 2005, 626 in 2004 and 592 in 2003.
Port Moresby and Western Highlands, which had recorded the highest
number of murder cases, also saw a drop within that period.
Port Moresby reported 127 last year, 131 cases in 2005, 168 in 2004 and
148 in 2003. WHP reported 69 cases each for last year and 2005, 56 in
2004 and 36 in 2003.
East Sepik, Oro and South Fly have reported the lowest with only four
cases last year.
Statistics also showed 706 rape cases last year compared to 856 in 2005,
998 in 2004 and 1,152 in 2003.
Last year, Eastern Highlands and Morobe provinces joined WHP to report
the highest number of rape cases.
Port Moresby and WHP reported the highest in 2005. WHP reported 111
cases while Morobe and EHP reported 104 cases each last year.
In 2005, Port Moresby reported 173 while WHP reported 120. This year
Port Moresby reported 87 cases. North Fly reported no cases last year.
