‘Stop Chinese bashing’

KURUMBUKARI landowners should stop the “Chinese bashing” in the media and get into proper dialogue with the China Metallurgical Construction Company (MCC), developers of the K3 billion Ramu nickel-cobalt project.
David Tigavu, chairman of Kurumbukari Landowners Association, said the landowners and Usino-Bundi MP Peter Yama should wait for the project review meeting in March to raise their concerns.
Mr Tigavu also warned that the scare campaign in the media was unhealthy for foreign investment in the country.
He said the current project agreement was very general as far as landowner participation was concerned and the review provided ample opportunity to come up with specific benefit structures.
Mr Tigavu made the comments last weekend in response to media reports that landowners had given MCC and the Government 30 days to come up with answers to their list of demands.
The list of demands range from landowner improvement in spin-off benefits to work-place health and safety and salary.
Mr Yama, whose electorate hosts nickel and cobalt deposit at Kurumbukari mountain, supported the landowners.
