Sacked village court men awaiting to get jobs back

By JAMES APA GUMUNO
MORE than 200 village court officials in Western Highlands province who have been removed by councillors and replaced with new officials are still waiting to be reinstated.
Gomis village court chairman Andrew Kiap, who claimed to represent 109 village court areas in the province, said yesterday despite a directive from the director for village court secretariat Peni Keris in 2005 to reinstate the former officials, so far no action had been taken.
Mr Kiap said the village court officials were unhappy with the prolonged delay and demanded an explanation from acting provincial administrator Michael Wandil and the law and order division why the directive has not been carried out.
He said a year had passed without any action being taken.
Mr Kiap said to make matters worse, they were still yet to receive their outstanding allowances for 1997 to 2004.
In a letter dated Nov 24, 2005 sent to Mr Keris, Mr Kiap said that any new village court official appointed by persons other than the Minister for Justice would be “illegal”.
Mr Kiap stressed that local level government councils were not allowed under the law to appoint new officials and revoke the appointment of old village court officials.
Mr Keris said the provincial administrator could only appoint peace officers and village court clerks.
