St John to run Gerehu clinic

ST JOHN Ambulance has taken over the management and coordination of activities of the nation’s largest clinic in Port Moresby.
This is the product of the partnership of the Department of Health and St John Ambulance to improve health care services in urban areas.
The partnership is to share the burden of the Port Moresby General Hospital in its outpatient, accident and emergency and labour and delivery sections.
The Gerehu Urban Health Centre, which serves a population of 46,000 people, will officially become the St John Health Centre under the agreement between the Department of Health and St John Ambulance signed last Dec 13.
When in operation, the health centre will include TB clinic, antenatal clinic, dental services, eye services, family planning and health awareness, and general outpatient services.
A 24-hour accident and emergency, and, labour and maternity section will be opened later on in the year.
As of Feb 1, all user fees collected from patients at the clinic will be used towards improving the facilities and services at the community clinic.
Patients under the age of five and over 55 will be treated free, including family planning services and rape and child abuse victims.
Clinic fees approved under the Public Hospitals (Charges) Act are as follows; K2 for out-patient, K1 for pharmacy prescription, K1 for clinic book, K8 for minor surgery, K10 to see the doctor, K1 for antenatal consultation, K10 for supervised delivery, K2 for pathology test and K2 for x-ray attendance.
Presently, the clinic operates from 8am to 3pm on weekdays and 8am to 12 noon on Saturdays and Sundays.
St John has welcomed the challenge to be able to extend its humanitarian services in hospital care to the people of PNG as it prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary this year.
