PM ‘invited’ to give evidence

By JULIA DAIA BORE
PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare has been “invited” to given evidence at the PNG Defence Force Board of Inquiry.
Sir Michael has been urged to come forward and verify if he indeed gave the orders to secretly fly fugitive Julian Moti in a military plane to the Solomon Islands on Oct 10, 2006.
The senior counsel assisting the inquiry John Kawi last Friday told the hearing that he had sent the “invitation letter” to the Prime Minister.
Mr Kawi told The National yesterday the letter was short and extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to avail himself to the inquiry so it can be ascertained whether or not he directed Leonard Louma, chief of staff to the PM’s office, or Joshua Kalinoe, Chief Secretary to Government, or Joseph Assaigo, the suspended director-general of the National Security Advisory Committee (NSAC), to airlift Moti out of Port Moresby.
Mr Kawi said it was made clear that the Prime Minister did not have to appear in person and that a written statement to the inquiry would be sufficient.
Mr Kawi said as the senior legal counsel assisting the Defence Force inquiry, and as the issuing officer, he signed the letter to the PM and delivered it to the PM’s office last Friday.
The Prime Minister’s press secretary Betha Somare said however, that she was not aware of the letter of invitation when contacted last night.
