High-speed optic cable deal signed

PAPE’ETE: French Polynesia’s Post and Telecommunications office has signed a €72.2 million (K314 million) deal with French telecom giant Alcatel-Lucent as the preferred bidder to install a new high-speed fibre optic cable between the French Pacific territory and Hawaii, Oceania Flash reported.
French Polynesia’s OPT have also nicknamed the cable project “Honotua” (the overseas link, in Tahitian language).
Once installed, the undersea high-speed connection to Hawaii (for a total length of some 4,650km) and the rest of the world was expected to considerably increase the level of connectivity, mainly in terms of internet broadband.
Local authorities were also banking on the future appeal of their destination for future metropolitan French and foreign investors, thanks to the new connection.– PNS
