COLUMN I

OH, what a beautiful morning, oh, what a beautiful day, tra la la … Our apologies if you’re feeling particularly gloomy this morning; we’ll try and cheer you up. Thursday today – and already 2007 has faded into some dim corner of our memories.
***
FIRST, a spot of housekeeping. A very good morning to correspondent Irene Gashu in Tokyo, who correctly named Miss Marilyn Monroe as the person, who although dead, is till churning a pretty penny; readers may recall that Ms Gashu is an inveterate traveller to PNG and has made many friends in our country.
***
AND keeping the good lady company as Monroe identifiers are two gentlemen of equally distinguished Column One prominence – Col Shephard of Yamba, NSW, and Max White of Brisbane – to whom we offer warmest greetings and best wishes for a prosperous 2008. We hear that Col has recently deserted his beloved Yamba for a brief business trip to Brisbane; in common with three of our offspring, Col described the allegedly tropical city as “damp”.

MIND you, southern Queensland residents, for whom the heavens opened not a moment too soon as 2007 clawed its way to a drought-ridden finale, must be eternally grateful for those downpours. We can but hope that Oz weather sorts itself out this year – the Aussies can do without snow in Alice Springs or sandstorms on Mt Kosciusko.
***
LIKE many other subscribers, we can hardly wait for Jan 25, the date marked for Digicel and Telikom customers to begin talking to each other. And we wouldn’t be surprised if landline phones gradually became museum fodder; perhaps that’s the solution to the activities of those evil thugs who’ve destroyed so many Telikom cables.
***
ON the other hand, PNG might try to score a world first by banning mobiles on public transport. Do the rest of us really need to hear the all-too-intimate details of Ice Cube McTwitch’s evening activities with the allegedly desirable Scotney Spias as we bump along Boroko Drive on the way to work?
***
WE’LL bid you farewell by asking you to submit your choice of PNG’s most used word to DeeNesenolis@hotmail.com by the coming Monday ... Cheers!
