ENB urged to improve lighthouse security

By ELIZABETH VUVU
EAST New Britain has the highest rate of vandalism of lighthouses and has been urged to improve on this as lighthouses provided safety for shipping vessels that brought mostly the bulk of goods being used widely in the province.

Provincial lighthouse committee chairman, Allan ToVue made these remarks yesterday during the presentation of cheques, for K51,000 by the national maritime safety authority to the 14 lighthouse landowner committees.
He said all community lighthouse committees must work together with the provincial committee and the provincial government to reduce the rate of vandalism as majority of goods used in ENB came on ships.
Two men from Tavui in Rabaul were reportdly now at the Kerevat jail for their alleged involvement in vandalising the Cape Tavui lighthouse.
Meanwhile NMSA’s community development manager Josephine Gena told landowner committees to look after and maintain their respective lighthouses with the funds they were presented.
Out of the K51,000 presented,K18,000 would go to landowners and K33,000 to the community landowners committee.
