Land portions at Basamuk Bay under review

LANDOWNERS of the proposed Ramu Nickel refinery are awaiting judicial review on the ownership of land portions 109 and 110 at Basamuk Bay in Rai Coast, Madang.
The case is scheduled to be heard by Justice David Cannings on Feb 15 at the Madang National Court.
The review was taken out by the Tong, Sibiyag, Nebu, Guhu and Ogeg clans, after Ganglau landowner company successfully reclaimed the land in 2004 and awarded status to the titles.
These were formally agricultural leases owned by the Lutheran church which abandoned the titles in 1972, and were retained by Ganglau in 2004.
Ganglau executive director Agustine Baimur said corporate corruption was getting out of control and the Government needed to address that.
Chairman Sande Suang said they would take out a further court order against Ramu Nickel for environmental damages including the bulldozing of portions 109 and 110 and burial sites to make way for the factory and wharf.
