Lae-Finsch road on again
By BONNIE ABOLA
PLANS for the road to Finschhafen are going to be pulled off the shelf,
dusted, and implemented.
The national highway linking Lae with Fincshhafen declared by former Prime
Minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu in 1990, would be revived by Nawae MP Timothy
Bonga.
Mr Bonga said last week in Lae that former Nawae MPs had not followed up on
the road construction.
He would now make sure that the road was built.
Although proponents from Lae had pushed for it, villagers and community
leaders from Finschhafen had opposed the road construction.
They said the road connection would make it easy for problems from Lae to
spread to Finschhafen and nothing was done in the past 17 years.
Finschhafen candidates in last year’s national elections did not include the
highway as a developmental concern in their campaigns.
Other developments in Nawae recently included the completion of the K3.8
million Sangkwep bridge.
Mr Bonga said another bridge, costing K5 million, called the Buso bridge
would be built at Wagang (Sipaia) village linking Bukawa.
Rough roads from Phoaom to Nawae High School will also be sealed as well as
to Situm service centre where the health centre, police station and
Department of Agriculture office is located.
Mr Bonga said Nawae High School, Situm service centre and urban Nabak would
also get electricity.
Water and power supply work has already begun in the Kamkumung settlement
areas.
