Simbu police – public’s greatest enemy

I RESPOND to your report about Simbu police harassing and assaulting travellers on the Highlands Highway (Jan 14).
It has become a normal practice for them and it has been happening for many years. Ordinary people are being terrorised and harassed by people who are supposed to be providing security and care.
I am a regular traveller and have faced such problems on many cases.
During one such incident, a group of policemen stopped us along the highway at Ku Village and confiscated several bags of betelnuts and asked for some money. We gave them K35 and they drove home smiling.
This unethical practice must stop. I call on the administration to discipline such unprofessional officers and restore confidence in the public.
Otherwise, the public’s greatest enemy is the Simbu police. It’s better to earn an honest day’s pay than to live by evil means.
