Discovery prompts Wenge to seek aid

By SAMPSON BONAI
THE recent discovery of sedimentary limestone that could produce gas and oil in a remote Dingnagat area in the Yus local level government in Kabwum, district, Morobe province, has prompted Morobe Governor Luther Wenge to seek Government assistance to carry out further tests to ascertain its viability.
Nickson Bomo the principle consultant from Bomo & Associates a local resource development consultant assisted by carrying out sampling from the oil seepage sites and made submissions to the Morobe provincial government for funding to conduct land registration for Gotomasa Resources Owners in the Yus LLG area.
Mr Wenge flew over to Kabwum with former MP Ginson Saonu and inspected the site where the discovery was made and was impressed with the discovery.
“I will seek Government’s support to conduct more sampling and exploration to determine its quantity and viability and to see if it is possible to develop it,” he said.
Officers from the Division of Mining and Natural Resources and Environment within Morobe administration headed by acting environment coordinator Robin Kiki visited the oil seepage sites and recommended that geo-technical experts from the Department of Petroleum and Energy and Mining visit the area to determine the viability of oil, gas and other mineral extraction.
Mr Kiki recommended that further laboratory testing and analysis be carried out on samples taken from other natural occurrences, including fresh drinking water supplies for Dingnagat, Makua, Tamunat and Torik which allegedly produces sulphuric and ammonia.
“Division of Agriculture and Livestock must liaise with National Agriculture Research Institute to inspect allegations of crop diseases that have been detected, and further more to introduce improved versions of staple foods like sweet potato, taro and banana to withstand droughts,” Mr Kiki said.
