Government told to table guns control report

COMMUNITY leaders of Kindiku tribe in Yongomugl sub-district of Simbu province have called on the Somare Government to table the recommendations of the national guns control committee report in this session of Parliament.
Since the summit in 2005, a report was submitted to the National Government, but no action had been taken to address the growing gun problem in the country, the leaders said.
Spokesman John Gerel said the country was in danger of being run by tribal warlords and gangsters, if the guns problem was not addressed.
“Our democracy is under threat and the very Government that set up the guns control committee did not care to address this growing illegal possession and use of high-powered guns,” he said.
Mr Gerel said this year’s general election was just 17 weeks away and claimed that there was a build-up of firearms in all corners of Simbu province.
He feared that candidates would use guns to manipulate votes.
