Empower village council of chiefs: B’ville leader

By ALOYSIUS LAUKAI
A BOUGAINVILLEAN chief is calling on the Autonomous Bougainville Government to empower village council of chiefs to immediately deal with the rising law and order problems in South Bougainville.
Chief Paul Korenu told The National in Buka last Friday that by empowering the council of chiefs was the only way to contain the problem, especially in South Bougainville.
Mr Korenu said the use of firepower by police to contain law and order situations would only add more problems and prolong the sufferings of people in the communities.
He also called on the authorities to involve youths in full time activities to keep them occupied instead of wandering aimlessly.
He said now that the ABG was putting more funds on road rehabilitation throughout Bougainville, more youth groups should be engaged in areas were unskilled labour was required.
Mr Korenu, a community school teacher in the area for 35 years, said young men in Konnou were still keeping guns in their possession as they have nothing else to keep themselves occupied with.
He said they were also keeping these weapons because they still feel insecure.
