‘CS should have plans to reduce escape rate’

CORRECTIONAL Service Institutions in the country should have plans to reduce the number of escapees to zero, acting Commissioner Martin Balthazar said.
He was speaking during the opening of a two-day corporate planning workshop last week.
“All institutions as well as respective regional command must have good strategic plans which include activities to reduce escapes in correctional institutions in order to achieve a zero escape rate,” he said.
Mr Balthazar said in order to achieve this outcome; working conditions for warders have to be improved and the current rehabilitation programmes expanded.
It will also require improvement to the current prison infrastructure throughout the country.
He acknowledged the significant contribution from the planning unit by assistant Commissioner Dominic Tomar on the development of CS corporate plans and the implementation and cost schedules CS had developed over the past years to improve the management of CS.
The workshop was facilitated by the planning unit of CS headquarters. A follow-up planning workshop will be held today.
