Tari hospital lack doctors

By Capt THOMAS KILALA in Mendi
TARI Hospital has had no doctors to attend to the sick for the last four years.
This was revealed by the Tari Lord Mayor George Tagobe this week, when he briefed the Chief of Defence Intelligence Col Francis Agwi during his visit to Tari.
Mr Tagobe told Col Agwi and his travelling party, including acting PNGDF operations commander Lt Col Verave Mae, State of Emergency (SoE) assistant controller Lt Col Mark Goina and commanding officer engineer battalion Douglas Papa, that it was very sad to see his district hospital without doctors since the last general election.
Mr Tagobe said the hospital was also facing drug shortage and this was a serious concern for the people in Tari and surrounding areas.
Col Agwi, who reverted to his post after suspended commander of PNGDF Peter Ilau was reinstated this week, travelled to Tari on Monday and visited Hides Gas project as well as Moran oil project in Kutubu, then to Nipa and Mendi before returning to Port Moresby yesterday.
Col Agwi was visiting soldiers engaged in the SoE operations and familiarising himself with resources developers in the province.
“As the Chief of Defence Intelligence, I need to have network with the resource developers so that Defence intelligence can assist other Government agencies like the NIO and police to counter transnational crimes like smuggling of guns and drugs in the Southern Highlands province,” Col Agwi said on his return from the province.
Meanwhile, PNGDF engineer detachment on SoE duties in the province has completed repair and maintenance of Radio Southern Highlands in Mendi.
It took them two and a half months to complete the job. The radio station is the only source of information for the majority of the people in the province.
Deputy radio station manager Jacob Mambi commended the soldiers for their effort.
Mr Mambi said this was the only major repair since the radio station was opened in 1973 by the then chief minister Sir Michael Somare.
The PNGDF engineering unit will also complete the fencing of Tari and Mendi airports, the Mendi market and upgrade roads in the province.
