Inguba eyed for SI’s top police post
By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
FORMER police commissioner Sam Inguba might be considered for the vacant
Solomon Islands police commissioner’s position, Solomon Island prime
minister’s media officer Deli Oso said yesterday.
Ms Oso told The National from Honiara to clarify reports in Papua New
Guinea and Solomon Islands that Mr Inguba was now a hot candidate for
the Solomon Islands police commissioner’s office since he had not been
re-appointed by the PNG Government.
According to reports, Solomon Islands foreign affairs minister Patterson
Oti, who had been vocal for the dismissal of their police commissioner
Shane Castle, met Mr Inguba in Port Moresby during the African Caribbean
Pacific-European Union meeting last year and expressed interest in him.
Mr Oti was then the acting police minister.
Last week, Mr Oti explained the manner in which Mr Castles was appointed
as police commissioner violated the constitution of Solomon Islands.
Mr Castles is an Australian.
Mr Inguba, who is on holidays in Lae, confirmed that Mr Oti had
expressed interest in him but then that was last year.
“I’m now staying low given the recent police saga. But I’m also aware
that the Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has put to Solomons prime
minister Manasseh Sogavare during the Pacific Island meeting in Fiji to
consider a PNG police officer to head their police force.”
Mr Inguba said he had a good relationship with the former Solomon
Islands prime minister Sir Allan Kemakeza who was then a former Solomon
Islands police assistant commissioner.
Sir Allan visited Port Moresby in 2004 and expressed his admiration in
the operation and administration of the force under Mr Inguba’s command.
Mr Oti followed suit last year and also expressed similar sentiments.
