10 Boram inmates released on licence
By GABRIEL FITO
TEN prisoners from East Sepik were among 77 prisoners nationwide
released on licence to mark the new year.
Boram jail commanding officer Chief Insp Emil Arami told The National
the release of the prisoners last Friday was a directive from the
headquarters in Port Moresby for detainees to be released on licence.
Mr Arami said the committee on release on licence had made a thorough
risk assessment and had established that these prisoners were low risk,
had served sufficient time, had medical problems, had gone out on leave
of absence and returned to prison without Correctional Services escort
and were not threats to the community, victims and to themselves.
He said the prisoners released were serving terms for minor offences and
had served at least one third of their prison term at Boram.
The 10 prisoners were released with the following conditions:
*That they shall not commit an offence;
*That they shall not consume any alcohol or any other intoxicating
substances for the duration of this order;
*That they shall perform community work programmes supervised by CBC
officers or an appointed volunteer for the duration of their sentence;
and,
*That they shall involve in church and community activities and keep
peace at all times.
The prisoners released were Mark Lunge, George Bira, Allan Romombi,
Kenneath Beata, Ronald Konilius, Arnold Makabia, Patrick Jul, Patrick
Baki, Livai Sanai and Bill Keisipik.
Mr Arami had appealed to the people of East Sepik to forgive and accept
them back into the society with their relatives, families and loved ones
where they once belonged and have been separated for so long.
He said these prisoners were still under conditions which they must
abide by at all times until their due date for release expires.
