Emil takes over league rein in Southern region
By WENDY KATUSELE FORMER Kumul Aquila Emil has been appointed PNG Rugby Football League development officer - Southern region - replacing Alf Davies who resigned. Emil brings with him vast experience as a player and being the first Papua New Guinean to be contracted to the Queensland Cowboys. Emil’s appointment was made at a PMGRFL board meeting on Jan 3. The former Kumul half/standoff had several stints with Australian clubs, which include Tracy rugby league club in Darwin, Charters Tower rugby league club in Townsville and the most notable, the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville. Emil’s rugby league career started back in 1985 with the Under 17 team of the Brothers Club in Port Moresby and from that year on, he has not looked back. He first donned the PNG colours in 1992 and was a regular face in the team until 1997. The former rugby league star said he was looking forward to the junior regional development programme. Emil said while it would be a big challenge for him, a lot of finance is needed to implement the junior development programme. “We need a lot of money to develop our junior players,” he said. PNG Schoolboys Rugby League chairman Ifisoe Segeyaro welcomed Emil’s appointment, adding it was a boost to our junior programmes. “His appointment is an asset to our junior programmes and we need him to impart his experience to the young players,” he said. Emil’s first task is to facilitate the junior development squad training camp which began in Port Moresby, Lae, Rabaul and Goroka yesterday.
