Last gasp effort to raise K35,000

By WENDY KATUSELE
THE Ragiannas’ – PNG women’s national rugby team – first ever international appearance hangs in the balance due to shortfall of K35,000.
The team are preparing to participate in this weekend’s sevens tournament in Darwin, Australia.
The shortage of funds has prompted PNG women’s rugby union president Cybelle Druma to make an 11th hour appeal for help.
The team are suppose to fly out today but because of the financial constraint, it has been moved to tomorrow but that will depend on securing funds in the next 24 hours.
Druma is appealing to business houses and individuals to assist the team.
“If corporate houses cannot sponsor the whole amount, at least individuals or business houses can sponsor one player for K2,000,” Druma said.
The national team made up players from Port Moresby had been in training since last November.
Druma is worried two months of training would go to waste especially when the girls had worked hard and looked forward to their first international outing.
“The girls are really keen to make this first trip and have trained so hard for the last two months and none of them has ever gone through such intensive training and it would be sad for this effort to go to waste,” Druma said.
She said other sports had also had their fair share of shortfalls to attend international events and have been rescued at the 11th hour and hopes their plight will be heard by those who have sports at heart.
Meanwhile, the rookies sevens side led by Douglas Guise left yesterday afternoon for the challenge.
