‘Improve image of police’

THE Government’s chief secretary has called on the police force to continue to work towards improving its image this year.
Isaac Lupari said police morale had been adversely affected in recent years following numerous robbery incidents involving criminals dressed as policemen.
“The majority of our disciplined forces are hard-working and strive to do their jobs despite lack of resources and other trying work conditions,” he said in a statement.
He called on police personnel to be more vigilant as criminals were using more sophisticated methods to carry out criminal activities, including kidnapping and hijacking of planes.
“Armed robbery has been on the increase in the last six months of last year, to average about seven robberies per month.
“Statistics indicated the arrest results of these robberies and these have not been encouraging.
“In most of these cases, the criminals were in police uniforms, carried what was believed to be police issued weapons and used police radios.
“Therefore, this year, I make a plea to members of the Royal PNG Constabulary to make a concerted effort to ensure the majority of our citizens are protected, and law and order is upheld throughout the nation,” he said.
Reiterating a call he made when addressing graduates from the Bomana Police College recently, Mr Lupari said all policemen and women should reflect on principles of discipline and commitment taught at Bomana.
“Such qualities include fairness, honesty, and respect for the rights of others, striving for excellence in whatever you do, displaying high moral values, and being accountable,” he said.
“These are also enshrined in the Police Code of Conduct, and all policemen and women have sworn to uphold them,” Mr Lupari said.
He also urged the people to be responsible citizens.
“I encourage fellow citizens to make a concerted effort this year to also assist Police Commissioner Gari Baki and his police force to do their job better.”
