City to launch urban development plan

By FRANK RAI
TAN urban development plan for Lae will be launched on Jan 26.
The 10-year plan aims to free customary lands for future commercial development, Allan McLay, Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) president, said.
The chamber was actively participating in promoting the plan by working with the city council, provincial administration and the Ahi people, Mr McLay said.
“We look forward to the plan to give some direction to the city’s expansion.”
Under the scheme, customary lands will be identified and zoned for future use in which owners, under formal arrangements, will be able to lease surplus land for development.
The previous two urban development plans for Lae city, the last done in the early 1980s did not properly take into account the issue of customary landownership.
Mr Mclay also revealed there was a problem with Lae city boundaries and the the city boundaries are already outdated as expansion has extended beyond city boundaries.
The plan will try to incorporate urban boundaries to include the ‘corridor” development area from 10-mile to Nadzab.
