Ipatas accuses PM of attempts to cover up

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare owes it to the people to see the Defence Force Board of Inquiry to it natural conclusion, Enga Governor and Parliamentary Leader of People’s Party Peter Ipatas said yesterday.
Mr Ipatas said the repeated attempts by the Government and its agents to stop all inquiries into the embarrassing episode of the flight of Australian Julian Moti from PNG indicated that the Government was hiding something.
“Now, all the attempts to stop the inquiry very clearly points to the fact that the Government is trying to hide the truth.”
Mr Ipatas said the truth was that PNG civil aviation, the PNG Defence Force Act and immigration laws were broken.
He said the truth was that PNG aided and abetted a person wanted by another friendly country for a criminal offence.
“The truth was that Papua New Guinean soldiers’ lives and those of the citizens of two other countries – Australia and Solomon Islands – were put under risk flying in an aircraft that the Defence Force itself had testified was unsafe,” Mr Ipatas said.
“The truth was that the national security of the country was compromised with the illegal and clandestine landing in another country of a PNG military plane in what could very easily have been construed as an act of invasion.
“The Prime Minister cannot run from this issue. It is not a dead issue at all. He must answer for this blunder which was being committed all around him while he was asleep.”
