Kingsley frets over adverse impact on Ramu eco-system

MADANG MP Alois Kingsley has raised concerns about major projects in the province having an impact on people’s livelihood and the environment.
In his questions to the Prime Minister, Mr Kingsley urged the Government to ensure minimum wages requirements were met by the Ramu nickel and cobalt project developers.
He said it had been a tradition of mining in PNG to sets certain terms and conditions of employment on development projects and Ramu developers should be no exception.
Mr Kingsley said social impact studies should also be conducted because past experience had shown that foreign workers had fathered children and then left the country leaving mothers to fend for the children.
The MP raised these matters as part of his questions to the Prime Minister, relating to possible adverse social and environmental impact on the Ramu River and its 300,000 population, who are surrounded by developments in Ramu nickel, Ramu sugar, Kainantu gold mine, and the proposed Yandera and Simbai gold mines.
“These people depend on Ramu River which flows from the headwaters in Eastern Highlands to Bogia in Madang province, for their livelihood.”
He asked whether any environmental impact study had been undertaken to determine whether or not the Ramu river system will be affected by these projects.
Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare in response asked the MP to put his questions on the notice paper and the minister responsible would respond in due course.
