Cops foil armed criminals’ attempt to steal hospital vehicle

THE Kainantu Rural Hospital has once again fallen victim to armed criminals this week, when the hospital’s new ambulance was held up and stolen by armed criminals.
However, it was recovered following a quick action by the police.
The hospital experienced a horrible incident last June, when armed men abducted and raped two Divine Word University health science female students on job training there.
According to reports from police, five men armed with bush knives, a factory-made pistol and a high powered rifle early this week threatened the driver and escaped with the new ambulance.
Acting Eastern Highlands provincial police commander Chief Insp David Seine said quick action by Kainantu police, who gave chase, forced the armed gang to abandon the ambulance and fled into nearby bushes, leaving behind the vehicle.
Insp Seine said the 10-seater ambulance was returned to the hospital in good condition.
Meanwhile, the small township of Kainantu experienced another tribal showdown this week when two ethnic groups clashed in a fiery battle.
According to police reports, a vehicle and several houses were burnt down and a number of people sustained serious injuries from the clash.
