Magistrate opts out of CIS officer’s hearing

THE Kerevat Correctional Institution commander Mathew Bine appeared briefly before the Kokopo District Court in East New Britain yesterday on a charge of sexually harassing a prison warder’s wife.
However, the presiding magistrate Regget Marum disqualified himself from hearing the case due to having close working relationship with the CIS commander.
Mr Marum said because of his close working relationship with Bine, he would have to arrange for another magistrate in due course to hear the case against Bine.
The case has been adjourned to Feb 13, where Bine will appear before a new magistrate.
Bine was released by Kokopo police on bail according to his own recognition.
On Tuesday, Bine was arrested and charged with using insulting words against a warder’s wife at the Correctional Institute.
He was arrested and charged by police under the Summary Offence Act section 7, subsection (b) for sexual harassment.
The incident between Bine and the warder’s wife took place last Nov 22.
