Balthazar wants water restored

THE ACTING Correctional Services Commissioner Martin Balthazar has called on authorities in the Eastern Highlands province to fix water problems at Bihute jail near Goroka.
Mr Balthazar’s call followed a report in The National on Wednesday regarding the death of a prisoner at the jail from dysentery, associated with water problem.
He told The National yesterday that he had already sent two letters to the adviser of the law and justice sector in Eastern Highlands to sort out the problem.
Goroka Base Hospital confirmed that the prisoner, believed to be from Eastern Highlands, died from dysentery.
Several others are still receiving treatment at the hospital.
“It is very unfortunate that one of the inmates at Bihute had died and several others admitted to the hospital,” Mr Balthazar said.
He said he had contacted the Goroka town manager regarding the water problem and was told that the shortages at the jail and warders’ compound was a result of vandalism to pipes leading to the jail premises.
Goroka town manager Yaunggao Uyassi, when contacted, said his officers were currently investigating the problem.
“We have been accused, therefore, I have sent my officers to investigate the problem,” Mr Uyassi said.
