Passam to reopen in two weeks

By ALISON ANIS
PASSAM National High School in the East Sepik province, which was reportedly shut down two weeks ago by angry landowners with demands of land compensation, will reopen its doors when classes resume in two weeks time.
This means parents, whose children have been selected to attend the Passam, can now cast aside their disappointments and start making arrangements for travel and school fees to be paid through the school’s account.
Education secretary Dr Joseph Pagelio told reporters at a press conference yesterday the landowners had decided to open the school after reaching an agreement with the Department of Education over compensation claims totalling more than K1 million.
The landowners from a nearby Paliama village claimed that their land has been polluted and its waters contaminated due to the ongoing sewage problem at Passam.
As a result, they wanted to close down the school and its facilities.
Dr Pagelio said education officials met with landowners in the area last Thursday and successfully reached an agreement to help meet their claims.
Dr Pagelio confirmed that the school would reopen on Jan 27 – two days before classes begin.
