Principal held over K150,000 theft

By PIUS MON
A PRINCIPAL from one of the newly established secondary schools in the Western Highlands province has been arrested and charged with misappropriation of K150,000 belonging to the school.
The principal was arrested last Thursday by police and is being held in custody.
The money he allegedly misused was for infrastructure development at the school.
Superintendent for high, secondary and vocational schools in the province Martin Marr told The National yesterday that the money was given to the school to carry out maintenance work by the provincial government as grants last year.
He said such misuse of funds from donors and parents, who work hard to raise school fees, was a very bad practice, especially by people in positions of trust.
“Headmasters and principals are leaders ... they are educated elites and we trust them to manage and run public institutions,” he said.
Children in this school were forced to go home early for Christmas break last year after funds ran out and the school could not continue to feed its boarding students.
Frustrated and hungry Grades 9 and 11 students at the school had a face-off with the principal after going without food for almost a month.
According to police, the principal is being held at the Baisu jail, while investigations are continuing.
A police spokesman said they were also investigating allegations that the school was stripped of K250,000 worth of assets.
