Guria praised for nurturing juniors rugby league players

By VERONICA MANUK
AGMARK Guria, the SP Cup franchise in the Islands region, have been praised for their support in training the NGI juniors.
The PNG Rugby Football League chief executive officer Jeff Wade was impressed with Guria taking the East New Britain junior league development squad under the wings.
The squad 20 juniors – U16, U17, U18 and U19 boys – underwent training in Kokopo, which started on Monday and ended today, under the guidance of former Guria coach Norm Norris and senior players like Solbat Lucas.
Wade was facilitating the training with the assistance of the NGI PNGRFL officers.
Wade said the support given by the Guria was overwhelming and showed that Guria were interested in bringing up top rugby plays for the region in the future.
Noris said Guria would help the squad in any way so that the players could develop their skills, talents and confidence at an early stage.
He said some of the players in the squad could be future Guria players.
Meanwhile, Wade said the aim of training squad was to build the players’ confidence and skill levels in preparation to be in the top four in the 2008 World Cup in Australia.
The training is beneficial as the players will return to their respective schools and local leagues to pass on the skills.
Wade, therefore called on schools and local leagues to give opportunity to the members in the squad to show others the skills they had learned.
He also encouraged parents and teachers to attend such clinics to support the squad.
Majority of the members in the squad were from ENB, two from Kavieng, one from Buka and one from Kimbe.
