Hunt for two more escapees: Wundia
One of the seven detainees who escaped from the Boram jail in
East Sepik about two weeks ago is now nursing bullet wounds at the Boram
General Hospital after being recaptured by police last week.
Boram jail commander, Supt Michael Wundia said yesterday another escapee,
who had been residing with the injured friend voluntarily surrendered to
Correctional Service personnel at Boram last Thursday after his accomplice
was shot by police.
Mr Wundia said the first three of the seven were apprehended by CS personnel
immediately after the jailbreak on Jan12.
He said so far, five had been recaptured and the hunt was still on for the
remaining two escapees.
Those that escaped included a man from the West coast, who was convicted for
armed robbery and six remandees who were awaiting their court appearance at
the National Court for murder and armed robbery.
Mr Wundia said the six men removed an old rail inside the cell block and
then cut a hole through the inner and outer fence before making their way
out through the cell’s sewerage drain last Jan12 night.
CS officers believed that the detainees must have used a plier or side
cutter to cut their way through the fence.
They suspected that such tools had been smuggled into the cell by the
inmates or thrown into the prison by relatives as the cell block was located
next to the main road.
Mr Wundia said unlike before, the prisoners were now being well looked after
and that they should stay on in good faith until their jail term expires.
The incident had been reported to police but the institution was conducting
an internal investigation to establish the cause of the breakout and whether
there was any negligence in the part of CS personnel.
Meanwhile, Mr Wundia has appealed to the public to report any sightings of
suspicious persons in their area to police.
