CAA to review bullets case
By SHEILA LASIBORI
A SENIOR officer who allegedly had with him 50 rounds of bullets when he
landed in Singapore from Port Moresby last July may not face any
prosecution.
Assistant Police Commissioner (Crimes) Raphael Huafolo said the bullets were
only found outside of PNG where they had no jurisdiction.
He said that technically, there was no evidence in the country to use
against the officer.
“This is outside our (police) jurisdiction and we have no evidence. If there
was evidence, then we can investigate,” he said.
The officer was alleged to have breached civil aviation regulations when he
took the bullets on board the Air Niugini flight on July 12 last year.
The bullets were only discovered during a normal security check on
passengers arriving at Singapore’s Changi Airport.
The officer was detained for questioning and released an hour later after
some senior PNG officials reportedly stepped in.
The Singapore Civil Aviation Authority told The National then that any
investigation to be carried out would be done by PNG.
The PNG Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) referred the matter to Police
Commissioner Gari Baki after getting the go-ahead from the attorney-general.
CAA acting director Joseph Kintau said yesterday that they would review the
case.
