Selling of turtle meat illegal

I NOTE with concern that turtle meat is being sold in fish markets throughout Port Moresby.
I understand that sea turtles are protected by international conventions from commercial fishing as they are an endangered species. I also understand that PNG is a signatory to these international conventions.
As I understand it, the international conventions only allow for traditional fishing of sea turtles, which would include traditional bartering (or trading) of turtle meat.
In my opinion, the selling of turtle meat in urban (or rural) fish markets is illegal. People are in fact catching turtles for commercial reasons.
The National Fishing Authority or whoever is responsible for enforcing these conventions should ensure that the sea turtles are protected, particularly from being caught and sold in our urban or rural fish markets.
I suggest that the NFA take a look at the following fish markets in Port Moresby – Manu, Gordon, Koki and Rainbow.
And for the rest of our residents in Port Moresby, please do not encourage the killing of sea turtles by buying turtle meat from our local fish markets.
