Mixed results for PNG

IT WAS a mixed day for both Peter Juni in the singles and for the PNG fours team since Monday at the 2008 World Bowls championship in Christchurch, New Zealand.
With both sides losing their first match of the day to very strong opposition, they fought back for good wins in the afternoon session, leaving them still with chances to qualify for the quarterfinals.
In the singles, Peter Juni lost decisively to the current world singles champion 21-5, the points for and against may hurt Juni later in the competition. In the afternoon, he had a hard fought win over Brunei 21-18, and is currently in equal fourth place in his pool along with four other sides including host nation New Zealand, Zimbabwe, and Spain. Juni is to play Israel and Norfolk Island tomorrow and both games a must win for him if he is to have any realistic chance of qualifying after his narrow one point loss to Malaysia in Day One of the competition.
The fours team also had a sound loss to the current world champion fours team, Australia losing 29 points to 10 before bouncing back in the afternoon thrashing Zimbabwe 27-13 to give them an outside chance of also qualifying.
