Amnesty period extended

FOUR bombs, 230 firearms, a huge quantity of ammunition and marijuana plants have been surrendered to police during a 14-day amnesty in Tewai-Siassi district, Morobe.

Morobe administrator Manasupe Zurenuoc was so pleased with the response that he extended the amnesty to the end of the month.
He assured the people that no one would be penalised if they handed in their offensive weapons.
Speaking at a ceremony in Sialum last week, Mr Zurenuoc said although a large number of weapons had been handed in, he believed that there were more out there.
The amnesty was imposed to help end a tribal conflict that had been going on in the area for three months over the ownership of a ranch.
Initially, police from Lae were deployed.
They recovered 17 guns and detained about 20 people, 11 of whom have been charged.
