Bougainville hit by power failure

BUSINESS houses in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville are frustrated over the frequent power blackouts since last week.
Like clockwork, Buka had been experiencing blackouts from mid-day for a few hours.
Businessman Johnson Alex said the community had expected the situation to improve when PNG Power started operating in 2006, but nothing has happened.
He said the least PNG Power could do was to give early notice.
PNG acting manager George Bonot, said the main generator powering Buka was faulty.
“At the moment we are running three other generators and distributing power equally to all sections of Buka in order to have at least two to three hours access of electricity until we fix the main generator,” he said.
“Hopefully, by the end of this week we would have it running again.”
Mr Bonot said his office was also short of staff and they were doing their best to overcome the problem.
He appealed to all business houses to get a standby generator.
